Musical Visits to High School Canadian Studies Classrooms

”Mike brings the curriculum to life through song. Students relate well to this musical approach to Canadian Studies. His performances are an excellent way to inspire interest and curiosity in this country's geography and history.“

Canada In Song is a lively and interactive musical exploration of the history, land, and peoples of Canada. These one-man performances bring shanties, ballads, anthems, work songs, satirical verse, spirituals, rap
and 'protest' songs into high school classrooms to provide a unique view of the dynamic issues, events and personalities in the Canadian Studies curriculum.

Canada In Song performances are tailored to the specific area of study of each class visited.

Units include:
Grade 12 Canadian Studies
Grade 10 History & Civics
Core, Extended & Immersion French
Grade 9 Geography
Grades 5-8 Canadian History

Bookings

Canada In Song performances range in length from 50 - 75 minutes, depending on the daily schedule of the school being visited. The shows work best in an informal setting (classroom, library, music or drama room) to allow for as much interaction with students as possible. Optimal audience size is between 20 and 60 students, although larger groups can be accommodated where necessary, depending on the performance venue.

Canada In Song can be booked as a full-day visit. Teachers schedule the performances as required throughout the day to accommodate different classes and levels.

Although each unit is highly focused on the curriculum of the class being visited, teachers are also encouraged to combine other disciplines when possible. For instance, performances have been booked for combined audiences of high school History, Music and Drama students.

Canada In Song's goal is not only to be as relevant and engaging as possible, but to also be flexible enough to meet the specific demands of each class. After a booking date is agreed upon, one or more of the teachers involved may wish to speak with Mike Ford to ask any questions they might have or to relate any pertinent specifics about the classes to be visited. These visits can be tailored to any part of the term or year - as a dynamic preview at the course's start, a memorable review near exam time, or anywhere during the course, providing a general overview as well as a focus on the segment that the students are studying at the time of the visit.
